(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago Symphony Orchestra will be back on stage before a live audience Thursday for the first time since March 7, 2020.

WBBM's Steve Miller got a preview at today's final rehearsal.

"My colleagues in the Chicago Symphony are analogous maybe to elite athletes," said Michael Mulcahy, CSO trombone, who will be conducting these first concerts back at Orchestra Hall.

"And it would not be an exaggeration to say that they're kind of OIympic in their level," he added.

"Despite all that, we are challenged by every live performance because no matter how great we were yesterday, what are you batting today?

"So they wipe the slate clean, and that gives us a special energy. It's very inspiring."

This first weekend of performances will feature music for brass and percussion.

Two other programs will follow on the next two weekends.
