CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- It appears Chicago-based U.S. Attorney John Lausch will be allowed to keep his job, at least for the time being.
Illinois Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, both Democrats, said the White House has agreed to their request that U.S. Attorney John Lausch be allowed to stay on until a permanent successor is named. He was appointed by Republican former President Trump; and his office is in the midst of investigating top Democrats around former Speaker Michael Madigan for corruption.
But Democrats, including former federal prosecutor, now Mayor, Lori Lightfoot, said it makes no sense for him to go.
"I've known this man for 20+ years. I've worked with him. I consider him a personal friend. He has done a tremendous job and a great support for the work that we are doing, particularly around violence," she said.
Lightfoot suggested if he is replaced, a woman or person of color should be considered.
"This is an office that has never had a woman or a person of color, and I want to see that history changed and make sure that the next person fully represents the diversity of this great city, but let's do it in a way that does not make us less safe," Lightfoot said.
Mayor Lightfoot said Lausch’s work in combating gun violence will be needed this summer.
