(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- After seeing several days of beautiful spring-like weather this week, Chicagoland residents can expect some light snow Friday night.

"A period of widespread snow is expected through most of the evening," according to the National Weather Service. Slippery conditions are expected to develop by mid-evening and continue overnight.

Temperatures will fall into the 20's Friday night-a significant drop from the upper 50's and 60 degree weather that Chicagoans were enjoying earlier this week.

NWS says the "wintry weather will be brief, with temperatures returning to well above normal by Sunday."

The City's Department of Streets and Sanitation has deployed salt spreaders in response to the snow and crews will monitor arterial streets, DuSable Lake Shore Drive, and bridges and overpasses, to ensure roads are safe and passable for emergency vehicles, public transportation and other drivers.
