(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Bubbly Creek was made infamous in Upton Sinclair’s book “The Jungle.” Now, it’s part of a restoration project along the Chicago River.
Bridgeport Ald. Nicole Lee says to the uninitiated, "Bubbly Creek sounds cute,” but it’s anything but.
Waste from the old Chicago Stockyards remains at the bottom of the creek to this day, occasionally emitting bubbles — hence the name.
Lee and U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin were in a Bridgeport park along the South Branch of the Chicago River and discussing a restoration project being led by the Shedd Aquarium.
Durbin secured $1 million in federal funds.
Shedd Aquarium President and CEO Bridget Coughlin says biologists have found that the river and creek at that location show great promise for native fish populations to rebound. That's already happening, she said.
The project includes wetlands and prairie restoration and research into aquatic life.
