CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Chicago-based skateboarding collective, froSkate, that centers around queer people of color is hosting a vigil at Grant Skatepark today to honor the life of Tyre Nichols.
FroSkate founder Karlie Thornton said the death of Tyre Nichols hit especially hard for the collective.
"It struck another chord for us at froSkate because Tyre Nichols is a part of our skate community. He was a skateboarder with dreams of continuing his progress in skateboarding. Along with being an artist, as a lot of skateboarders are, he was an amazing photographer,” Thornton said.
She said since froSkate holds a lot of space for Black people, holding this vigil just made sense.
"Our community felt it was the right thing to do for us to hold space for everyone to come together and have a moment of communal healing and just love and just the chance for us to just hold each other and celebrate our life while we have it,” Thornton added.
The vigil starts at 5 p.m. and will include body healing rituals, spoken word, sound healing, and altar making.
FroSkate members encourage attendees to dress in sunset-like colors to "honor the visual art of Tyre Nichols' photography."
