(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — An advocate for Chicago's Asian American community says she hopes the appointment of Nicole Lee as 11th Ward alderwoman will benefit all communities of color across the city.
Lee will be the first Asian American woman to serve on the Chicago City Council. Mayor Lightfoot tapped her from among nearly 30 applicants, following the felony conviction of incumbent Patrick Daley Thompson.
Grace Pai, executive director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice Chicago, said issues important to the community include access to affordable housing and health care, more job opportunities and immigrant rights.
“I personally want to see Nicole focus on issues that are important to Asian American community residents, but also all marginalized communities in Chicago. We know that the struggles that Asian American communities have faced mirror a lot of other immigrant communities and communities of color,” she said.
Lee is a native of Chinatown and has been a business executive.
