Local environmental group installs SW Side's first public EV charging station

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - If you're looking for a charge on the Southwest Side, someone's got you covered.

Jonathan Pereira is executive director of Plant Chicago, located in the Back of the Yards on the Southwest Side. Plant Chicago does a lot of things, including work on food access and promoting green and circular economies.

They offer a reduced-cost place to charge up your electric vehicle. It’s the first public EV charging station on the Southwest Side.

“When you think about making electric vehicles more accessible, there are issues with access,” Pereira said. “Not everybody has the ability to install their own EV charging station at home, either for money or just space.”

“If electric vehicles are going to become more ubiquitous, more common,  you need to have publicly available charging stations.”

For a small fee, Pereiera said drivers can access the station at any hour.

“We are essentially recouping the electricity that we are providing. If you live in an apartment, in heavy urban areas, there’s a concern, where are you going to be able to charge? So, you need to have publicly available charging stations," Pereira said.
