(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A 10-year-old child crashed a stolen vehicle into a Northern Indiana pond Monday morning but escaped serious injury, police said.

South Bend police say they got a call around 7:30 a.m. for a vehicle that was reported stolen. Around this time, dispatchers started getting calls about a reckless driver going down Ironwood Drive.

"We were also alerted at the time that that driver could be the approximate age of 10 years old,” Ashley O’Chap, the South Bend Police Department’s communications director, tells WBBM Newsradio.

She says the driver, a boy, struck another vehicle and a mailbox before driving onto the property of St. Jude Catholic Church in St. Joseph County. The vehicle ended up in a retention pond, O’Chap said.

The 10-year-old was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. An investigation continues.
