(WBBM NEWSRADIO) —A 1-year-old boy who was shot in the head last week on Lake Shore Drive is making “slow but steady progress,” doctors said Monday.

Kayden Swann remains intubated and in critical condition at Lurie Children’s Hospital but can move his extremities, according to a statement from Dr. Marcelo Malakooti, medical director of the hospital’s pediatric intensive care unit.

“We are hopeful that we may be able to remove the ventilator at some point in the future,” Malakooti said.

Kayden was removed from a medically induced coma Saturday but was still on a ventilator to “assist with his breathing and other critical therapies,” Malakooti said in a statement at the time.

A bullet struck the 1-year-old in the temple April 6 as he rode in a car on Lake Shore Drive near Grant Park, after a road-rage dispute turned violent, Chicago police have said.

Joshua Brown, a 43-year-old man in a relationship with Kayden’s grandmother, was driving the car he was riding in. The car was nearly struck by an SUV which was trying to merge onto Lake Shore Drive near Soldier Field, investigators have said.

Brown got into an argument with the driver of the SUV who pulled out a gun and threatened him, prosecutors said. Brown pulled out his own gun and put it on his lap before attempting to drive away.

The driver of the SUV followed and opened fire, striking Kayden. The gunman has not been arrested.

Brown was charged with possessing a weapon without proper state identification and was released on bond. Prosecutors said there is no evidence he fired his gun or displayed it during the incident.
