CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A single Christmas tree was put up in the halls of the Museum of Science and Industry back in 1942 as a salute to the Allies during World War II and a way to bring Chicago communities together.

“We use the tree as a way to convey how people are celebrating the holidays and customs and celebrations throughout the globe,” said Jeff Buonomo, Director of Brand Engagement at MSI.

Now, the museum's 81st annual “Christmas Around the World” exhibit has blossomed into a display of over 57 trees to represent holiday traditions around the world. The event aims to highlight the connection between cultures during Christmas.

“Hopefully people will realize how we’re more alike than we are different,” said Buonomo.

From the pyramid ornaments on the tree of Egypt to vespa and espresso trinkets on the tree of Italy, the spirit of individuality and unity is highlighted in every display. Each tree represents a different culture and story. Some trees, including the one from Russia, are decorated by generations of different family members throughout the decades.

“Thousands of lights have been used for the display and thousands and thousands of ornaments and even more thousands worth of volunteer hours from all these great groups from around Chicagoland,” said Buonomo.

Thousands of community volunteers came together to help create the annual celebration of Christmas. This year's theme is on the science of snow with a 50-foot center tree decorated with snow themed ornaments and a special “snowfall” experience every half hour. Santa will also be in attendance at the exhibit on select days, along with special holiday food and beverages.

The exhibit runs through January 7th, 2024. You can read more about the event here.
