(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A $25,000 gun buy-back program in Chicago’s Auburn Gresham neighborhood started promisingly Monday, organizers said.

On the very first day of the event held at St. Sabina Church, Father Michael Pfleger said officials there paid $10,000 for more than 80 guns that would otherwise be out in the community.

This program is geared toward youths, who will be offered various services, including mentoring.

“The gun turn in program is the contact,” Pfleger said.

Pfleger says the program will run at St. Sabina church each day until funding runs out. He said it’s possible more money can be raised.
