(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Citing a growing number of problems with customers, Cicero trustees voted on Tuesday to cut back liquor sales at businesses.

Booze-fueled arguments and shootings were behind the town’s decision to cut back the hours that bars and restaurants can sell liquor, according to Cicero Spokesman Ray Hanania.

He said there was a shooting outside a bar earlier this month.

“There have been some real problems,” he said. “Constant police calls, especially over the weekend, almost every weekend. So, President Dominick felt that we needed to do something because it’s soaking up our resources.”

The new ordinance will curtail the hours that bars, restaurants and stores can sell liquor back from 2 a.m. during the week and 3 a.m. on Saturdays. Starting in January, the more than 100 Cicero establishments will have to stop liquor sales at midnight — or face fines and possible loss of their licenses.

Even the sale of packaged liquor will be banned after midnight.
