CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- If you were to guess which group of City of Chicago workers had the lowest percentage of reporting of their COVID vaccination status, you might guess the police department, but you’d be wrong.
The lowest vaccination reporting level rests with City Council staffers. There are 356 of them, and 300 of them - just over 84 percent - have reported whether they’re vaccinated or not. Meanwhile, the Chicago Police Department has a greater number of non-reporting employees - more than 1,300 - but a higher percentage reporting than council staffers at 89 percent.
Chicago aldermen, themselves, do not fall under the city’s vaccination reporting mandate, but their employees do and 46th Ward Alderman James Cappelman told CBS 2, "it’s embarrassing. I mean, we’re supposed to be the leaders in all this."
In regards to the latest numbers, Ald. Cappelman said, "I think this is good notice for us to get our act together making sure we follow through this mandate that is done to protect everyone."
The third lowest reporting group of city workers is the city's Treasurer’s Office. Two of the office’s 28 employees have not yet told the city whether they’re vaccinated.
Almost 95 percent of all city workers have complied with the city’s mandate. Of the city’s 30,000+ employees, more than 29,000 have reported their vaccination status.
