CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The city of Chicago is preparing to start a program to give away 5,000 bikes and safety equipment.

Applications will start being accepted next week for Bike Chicago. It’s an effort to get single-speed bikes into the hands of people who don’t already have a bike. In this first year, 500 bikes will be given to people who are at least 14 years old, may find it hard to get around the city, and who have a household income of 100 percent of the median city income, which is about $104,000 dollars for a family of four.

“Every resident in our city deserves equitable access to safe, reliable, and affordable clean transportation options,” said Mayor Lori Lightfoot in a statement.

“Bike Chicago accelerates both the City’s climate and equity goals by providing new workforce pathways, bikes and supportive resources that promote safe biking and a healthy low-carbon transportation ecosystem for all Chicagoans.

Between next year and 2026, 4,500 more bikes and helmets will be distributed for free.

Beginning July 18, residents can apply online or by mail. The online application and paper application will be available at https://www.chicago.gov/bikechicago.
