CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Family members of a man who was shot and killed by a police officer during a foot chase in North Lawndale last month saw body camera video of the incident ahead of its public release.
Reginald Clay Jr.’s father saw the video of the controversial shooting that had the police and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability at odds.
“...No reason at all, no reason at all to chase him. And, guess what? He ain’t never coming back,” said Reginald Clay Senior.
The father said the shooting was “reckless.”
Clay, according to Deputy Chief of Detectives Rahman Muhammad, was seen leaning into a car, and, when he saw officers, he put his hand in his waistband and ran.
There was a foot chase.
“That individual turned toward the officer, brandished a handgun and the officer discharged their weapon, striking the individual,” Muhammad said after the shooting.
That differs from the account of the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, which made no mention of the brandishing of a handgun.
It said one was recovered after the shooting.
