CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago Bears pick during the first round of the NFL Draft was announced by a respected member of the community on Chicago's Far South Side.
Bears fans learned the team has a new quarterback from Carlos Nelson, CEO of the Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation.
"With the 11th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, my Chicago Bears select Justin Fields, quarterback from Ohio State."
Nelson was recognized during the draft for his work on a community revitalization plan that includes a federally qualified healthcare facility in a neighborhood hard-hit by COVID-19.
Additionally - this is pretty cool - during the Chicago White Sox- Detroit Tigers game, while little was happening on the field, fans erupted in cheers, obviously following the draft.
"If you are looking at your phone and you are cheering - it's Justin Fields. Wow. Love it. Just random high-fives in the ballpark in April," said Steve Stone and Jason Benetti.
