CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Community members hope to save the High Ridge YMCA in West Rogers Park as it prepared to close permanently after more than 70 years.

Declining membership in recent years and the financial strains caused by the pandemic are the reasons the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago cites for the decision to cut operations at the facility.

Sue Ontiveros of the Save the High Ridge YMCA Coalition says she understands the pandemic has affected everything. But she said she doubts membership was declining, considering the use of the facility she observed before the pandemic.

Ontiveros said the High Ridge YMCA brought together members of a very diverse community.

The coalition is talking with organizations that have expressed an interest in reopening the facility as a community center. Ontiveros said it's too early in the process to provide details.
