Community to hold DIY Fourth of July parade following cancellation

Fourth of July parade

WONDER LAKE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Some Fourth of July holiday events are still being cancelled or scaled back due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so one north suburban community is holding a "DIY" Fourth of July parade.

The committee that plans and stages the Independence Day parade in north suburban Wonder Lake announced earlier this year that it was cancelling the event due to uncertainty surrounding the pandemic.

In response to the disappointment that was expressed on social media, Therese Matthys said she and other members of the community worked on staging their own parade.

"We just met at a local restaurant and decided that we would try to make this work," she said.

Planning for the Independence Day parade usually starts in September of the year before. Matthys said there's been considerable response in less time.

"I think we have 30+ entries in the parade and I think typically there's between 50 to 60," she said.

Members of the parade committee are helping out in the planning of this year's informal parade. It steps off at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Christ the King Church on East Wonder Lake Road.
