CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Two men in their early 20s transported themselves to Northwestern Hospital with gunshot wounds early Saturday — where Chicago police then took them into custody.

The men were believed to have fled a crime scene in the Loop.

Based on the preliminary Chicago police report, a 31-year-old man was approaching his own vehicle near Randolph and Dearborn Streets about 4 a.m. when shots were fired in his direction from someone in a red SUV.

It was at that time the man realized there was also someone in his parked vehicle.

During the incident the intended victim, who is a concealed carry license holder, opened fire. He struck both suspects and was not injured.

This marks the third time in about one week that armed citizens in Chicago have interrupted crimes in progress.

Police said they believe there was a third person involved in the likely intended car theft. That person is not in custody.
