NAPERVILLE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Members of Congress are pushing hard to get the word out about the Child Tax Credit that could mean up to $300 a month per child to low-income families.
Lauren Underwood was among three Congress members in Naperville reminding families to apply for the expanded Child Tax Credit.
"Low-income families, including those who haven't made enough money to be required to file taxes, will be eligible for this relief. It's estimated that the new Child Tax Credit will cut child poverty in half," Underwood said.
Shelly Bromberek with the YWCA joined Congress members in Naperville to urge families making less than $75,000 to apply for the Child Tax Credit.
"At the YWCA, we had families struggling with food insecurity, housing. This will be a significant progress for those families," she said.
Among those already being helped is Colleen Zavodney, a Woodridge parent who worked for the same family-owned restaurant for 30 years, until the pandemic.
"I went from making a stable income to not knowing if I was going to have enough money to pay the mortgage and also put food on the table. The Child Tax Credit will ensure that I have a steady monthly income, because mine is still rebounding from the last year and a half," Zavodney said.
Congressman Bill Foster said this money could make a big difference and families should not pass up this much money.
"From July through December 2021, qualifying families can get up to $300 a month per child for children 0-5 and $250 a month per child for children 6-17," Foster said.
