SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADI0) -- Northwest suburban Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi applauded the gun safety law celebrated in Washington Monday, but said that it is not the last word on what’s needed to cut down on mass shootings across the country.

Krishnamoorthi believes the bipartisan gun safety law approved by Congress might have prevented the deadly 4th of July parade shooting in Highland Park.

"I think it could have helped even with the Highland Park shooter in the sesnse of perhaps educating people better about the use of red flag laws and also taking into account a juvenille's mental health history."

However, the Schaumburg Democrat said something must be done to keep deadly weapons of war, like the rifle used in Highland Park, out of the hands of people younger than 21 and those with a history of mental troubles.

Governor Pritzker, who was in Washington, is calling for a national ban on assault weapons and high capacity magazines.
