(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Cook County Assessor said as new assessments go out, property owners, for the most part, won’t see staggering increases in their property values, which is good news at tax time.
Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi said reassessments have gone out for Norridge and Harwood Heights, albeit a little late.
“Basically, what we’ll see this year is we’ll be catching up with the schedule after taking some time last year to put in a new computer system,” Kaegi said.
Kaegi said this is the first round that does not have to make up for what he described as the greatly skewed practices of his predecessor, Joe Berrios, who tilted the scales in favor of commercial landlords.
“So the change is not going to be as great as people have seen in the past," Kaegi said. "Of course there are some changes. Residential markets have been strong since the offset of COVID; with commercial properties it’s a mixed bag.”
He said that the numbers are fair to all sides. Primary voters must have appreciated that, Kaegi said, as they renominated him for Cook County Assessor in June.
