OAK LAWN, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) --The Cook County State's Attorney's Office is calling for an investigation into a teen's arrest in southwest suburban Oak Lawn.
Two Oak Lawn officers were seen last week on video beating a teen during an arrest. The Oak Lawn Police Department said that Hadi Abuatellah, 17 ignored the lawful commands of the Oak Lawn Police Department and then eluded them and resisted arrest.
"We commend our officers' decision to use less-than-lethal force to detain the armed offender," Oak Lawn officials said in a statement.
"As a society the bigger picture problem needs to become the primary part of the conversation, and that is respect for law enforcement and compliance with the their lawful orders are the only ways we going to put an end to these types of incidents."
The incident has sparked protest in the Arab-American community and the Chicago branch of the Council on American-Islamic Relations has expressed their disappointment as to how the arrest was handled.
“Regardless of the alleged infraction that led to the arrest, the video clearly shows a restrained teenager in submission, not resisting, being brutally beaten by three officers without justification,” CAIR-Chicago Executive Director Ahmed Rehab said in a statement.
“As a result, he has sustained internal bleeding to the head, a broken nose, and other bodily injuries, all fully avoidable. The issue here is excessive force and police brutality. Something we are seeing again and again and again.”
