(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Cook County’s population continued to drop in 2023, according to the latest census numbers released Thursday.
Cook County is still the second-most populated county in the country, with Los Angeles County beating it for first place. That’s about where the good news ends, though, for Cook County.
U.S. Census data from 2023 shows Cook County lost more than 24,000 residents over the course of the year. That’s despite nearly 24,000 international new arrivals coming to the county — according to the census data.
Although Cook County did not see growth in 2023, the Midwest did. The region saw positive growth for the first time since 2020.
Other counties with big population drops were Los Angeles County, Kings County, Queens County and Bronx County in New York, as well as Miami-Dade County.
If there’s a silver lining for Cook County, it may be that declines in 2023 were less severe than declines in 2022.
