(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A grand jury has indicted the Winnebago County coroner on charges he stole thousands of dollars from dead residents and their families. Now, ranking county board member said the coroner should resign.
Burt Gerl, who chairs the board’s Public Safety Committee, on Friday said he expects the board to approve a resolution next week calling for Bill Hintz's resignation.
He also says the state's attorney and the Illinois Attorney General have been asked whether there is any way Hintz can be removed from office because of the charges against him.
Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul is prosecuting Hintz and accuses him of stealing about $2,500 paid by the families of people who had been cremated at the county’s expense and taking more than $14,000 belonging to dead people from an evidence vault.
Raoul said those allegations surfaced after Hintz was charged with fraudulently using county credit cards.
