(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The ongoing political drama in south suburban Calumet City ratcheted up Monday when the mayor made serious accusations against the city clerk with whom he’s been feuding.

Calumet City Mayor Thaddeus Jones said a forensic audit he authorized suggests that nearly $400,000 is missing under City Clerk Nyota Figgs. He said possible wrongdoing involves credit card purchases and document shredding.

Jones had Allysia Benford do the audit. Among the accusations: Benford said Figgs had documents shredded in August when she knew an audit was underway. Also, Figgs allegedly used a scissors to cut a line to a surveillance camera the mayor had set up in Figgs’ office.

Mayor Jones is calling on the FBI to investigate.

City Clerk Nyota Figgs welcomes an outside investigation. She suggested the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office or the Illinois Attorney General.

“Calumet City needs an intervention,” she said.

Figgs told WBBM Newsradio there has been no illegal activity. She said lost revenue from parking tickets was a result of staff layoffs during the pandemic.

The documents she had destroyed came on the orders from Mayor Jones’ administration. She admitted cutting the surveillance video line.

Figgs says Mayor Jones’ allegations are political bullying and a smear campaign.
