(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A new "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movie is being released on Aug. 2, and someone who loves "real" turtles is asking fans to keep something in mind.

“Of course, a regular turtle is not a ninja turtle. They don’t fly. They don’t jump through the air,” says Susan Tellem, co-founder and executive director of American Tortoise Rescue. “They don’t want to be in a tank.”

History has shown that after the release of “Ninja Turtles” movies, turtles lose their lives to the pet trade. Many children get turtles, only to abandon them later because the animals are largely, well, boring.

“I’m asking that people buy toys, not turtles,” Tellem said.
