(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The high school fall sports season began Monday across the state with student athletes eager for a more normal experience after two years of COVID challenges.

Illinois High School Association teams can begin holding tryouts and practices.

Senn High School senior John Watson says the soccer season is the highlight of his year at his North Side school.

For Senior Kira Hutson, this is only the third year she’ll be playing for Metea Valley in Aurora.

Two years ago, COVID pushed the girls volleyball season to the spring, which conflicted with her club team schedule, she said.

Watson is the varsity captain this year and hopes the Bulldogs have a better record — and more fans in the stands. The virus prevented supporters from packing them last year.

Hutson plans to graduate early and has already committed to play at the University of Florida.

She played with Team USA this summer after helping Metea win its first state championship last year.
