Chicago health commissioner says COVID-19 metrics support lifting mask, vaccine mandates

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – You’re likely to see a lot more smiles on Monday as the city of Chicago and Cook County join the state of Illinois in lifting mask mandates and their own proof of vaccination requirements.

The sight of full faces in public places indoors. Remember those? City and Cook County political and public health officials said numbers are in a good place and that mask mandates and proof-of-vaccination requirements will be lifted in most places Monday.

Chicago Public Health Commissioner Allison Arwady said the city is seeing fewer than 300 cases of COVID-19 a day.

“Our peak of the Omicron surge. We had more than 10,000 cases diagnosed in one day in Chicago. That doesn’t even count home tests. That was just at the very end of December so the fact that we’re in a place two months after that to be able to lift these mitigations safely, I’m really pleased with,” Arwardy said.

Masks will continue to be required on public transportation – a federal rule – healthcare settings, daycare centers and Chicago Public Schools.

People still may wear a mask where they want to or where a private business requires it.
