CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Chicago Police are warning residents of Lakeview East about two attempted sexual assaults Monday night.
A 25-year-old woman walking near Addison and Broadway at about 9 p.m. was grabbed from behind, police said, by a man who claimed to have a gun.
The department said when he attempted to assault her the woman screamed, and people nearby stepped in and he ran off.
About 10 minutes later, police said a woman near Buckingham and Halsted was knocked down from behind by a man who got on top of her and made sexually explicit comments. The 23-year-old fought him off.
Police encourage residents to alert their neighbors and not to let their kids walk or play alone.
Forty-fourth Ward Alderman Bennett Lawson issued the following statement:
“I am disgusted, angry and deeply upset by the attempted sexual assaults that occurred last night in Lakeview. Everyone deserves to be and feel safe in our community, and I will work tirelessly with the 19th District police to try to identify the perpetrator and prevent this from happening again. I encourage anyone with information to call 312-744-8261. I am incredibly grateful for those who took action to stop one of the attempted assaults – it’s that sense of community and shared responsibility that makes our neighborhood so strong.”
