CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago Police Department leaders have reportedly been put on notice that they need to make more arrests, engage more residents, and solve more murders, or face consequences.

The mayor and the police superintendent emerged from a meeting with police brass that was described as “threatening.”

They addressed reporters about expectations following the most violent year in more than two decades. Lightfoot had a strong message for department leaders:

"If you don't wake up every morning thinking what you can individually do more to make our city safer, you’re in the wrong job."

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that a source described the tone during the closed door meeting as “threatening.”

Other expectations that were outlined were: “make due with what you have to get more arrests,” generate more positive interactions on the street and “clear more murders".

The source said it was implied that demotions would be a consequence if things continue as they are.
