CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Chicago Police Department's Marine Unit has recovered the body of an unidentified female from Lake Michigan near Foster Beach where a 19-year-old woman was reported missing in the water Wednesday evening.
The Chicago Fire Department’s dive team suspended their search near Foster Beach Wednesday night for the woman. Witnesses told police that the woman was struggling to swim to shore at around 8:30 p.m., and then went under water.
Chicago Police said first responders would resume their search during the daylight hours.
Detectives are conducting a death investigation pending autopsy results. The body is being transferred to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office for identification. No additional information is available at this time.
So far in 2023, six people have drowned in Lake Michigan, more than any other Great Lake, according to the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project, a nonprofit group dedicated to drowning prevention. Two of those six people drowned near Chicago and another drowned in suburban Waukegan.
