CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Video of the police shooting of 13-year-old Adam Toledo is expected to be released to the public as early as next week, the Chicago Police Department braces for possible unrest in the city.
Paired with the upcoming verdict in the Derrick Chauvin case concerning George Floyd's death, CPD Superintendent Dave Brown looks to get ahead of a repeat from last year's unrest. Brown seeks to do this by canceling days off for officers implementing 12 hour shifts and repurposing some officers from their districts to the downtown and lakefront areas.
Alderman Raymond Lopez of the 15th Ward told WBBM those are exactly the same mistakes that were made
“Last year, we've seen where officers have had 12 hour shifts no days off and how exhausted they get how dangerous that is for our neighborhoods where mistakes can be made,” Lopez said.
Representing Back of the Yards, Brighton Park, Gage Park and West Englewood, Lopez said business corridors in those areas will not survive another year of reduced police presence if another round of unrest occurs.
“You call the police from those districts that protect those small family owned businesses and something happens they will never be able to recover,” Lopez said.
Adam Toledo was fatally shot by police March 29 in Little Village on the South Side.
Ruben Roman, 21, who was outside with Adam Toledo when the boy was shot, is expected in court Saturday afternoon on felony gun charges in connection with the incident.
Roman was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, as well as endangerment of a child and violating probation, Chicago police said.
