CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago Board of Education will vote Thursday on a resolution concerning school choice.
The district wants to “transition away from privatization and admissions/enrollment policies and approaches that further stratification and inequity and drive student enrollment away from neighborhood schools," according to the resolution.
When Brandon Johnson was running for mayor, the former teacher said the school choice system is a “Hunger Games scenario.”
The resolution stated the intent is to have “fully-resourced neighborhood schools, prioritizing schools and communities most harmed by structural racism, past inequitable policies and disinvestment.”
This is not a policy change yet. It’s the start of a conversation.
However, Crain's Business reports that Chicago Public Schools officials declined to specify changes or say how far they want to move away from the choice system, because they said they want to collect community feedback on the proposed changes, which would be outlined in a final five-year strategic plan this summer.
