CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago Public Schools students have returned for in-person classes and now the district is mandating Local School Councils resume in-person meetings, but several members aren’t on board.
Chicago Public Schools sent out an email explaining that Governor Pritzker’s emergency COVID provisions that required public meetings be held online has ended and that LSC meetings should now be held in-person.
Not all Local School Council members are on board with the decision.
A group of 17 representatives from five Rogers Park schools signed a letter to LSC Director Myra Winding expressing their “extreme disappointment”.
“First and foremost, the pandemic is not over,” the LSC members wrote. “Given that LSCs have met virtually without any issues that we are aware of for over a year, this is an arbitrary decision that places LSC members unnecessarily at risk.”
The group said the pandemic is far from over and that resuming in-person meetings would “serve to stifle community and LSC voices,” particularly those who are older, immunocompromised or have to be home to care for their children.
