CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Chicago School Board narrowly approved Wednesday a $175 million payment to cover underfunded pensions, with some criticism of City Hall.
It’s the third year in a row that the public school system is paying what the city used to pay. In 2020 the payment was $60 million and last year it was $100 million. The vote was 3-to-2.
Board member Elizabeth Todd-Breland was a no vote.
“Statutorily by law, it is still the responsibility of the city to make this payment. The city has shifted multiple other expenses that they see as being CPS to CPS- crossing guards, Safe Passage, SROs. So, I’m not comfortable with having City Hall balance anymore of their budget on CPS’s budget,” said Todd-Breland.
The other no-vote, Luisiana Melendez, said it’s “is not in the best interest of the children of CPS” and is “not justified.”
