CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The mayor of Crystal Lake admits he made a mistake and he’s decided to pull his name off the ballot for the February election.

Mayor Haig Haleblian was running unopposed for another term… and he’s still running, but as a write-in candidate.

Objections were filed by a candidate running for City Council, Don Kountz. The mayor omitted a statement of candidacy and a receipt for filing a statement of economic interests.

"I made a mistake and I fully admit to it," he told the Northwest Herald.

“Pulling my name off the ballot will only embolden my run as a write-in candidate and will mobilize my constituents who will re-elect me.”

Haleblian added, “Let me make this perfectly clear, I am not going to quit this race.”

It was noted supporters will have to learn to spell his name, which sounds different than it looks.
