(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago Transit Authority’s security chief says technology and new strategies are paying off as the agency and the police work to increase the safety of riders.

Overall, it’s a safe system, the CTA’s vice president of security, Kevin Ryan, said Tuesday.

A half dozen times in the past two months, he said, police have been able to get guns off the system after officers monitoring radio calls have pulled up CTA cameras, located suspects, and sent still pictures or video to officers on the streets in real or near-real time.

“Let’s be honest, 38,000 cameras – somebody can’t watch 38,000 cameras,” Ryan said.

Ryan was on the L platform at Clark and Lake, where transit officers had a roll call. They were looking to increase their presence and the perception of safety.
