(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Friday night, for the first time ever, the Chicago Teachers Union and the Chicago Public Schools will hold a public contract bargaining session.
The CTU and CPS officials will meet publicly from 5 to 7 p.m. at Marquette Elementary School in Chicago Lawn. Union President Stacy Davis Gates says parents, students and community leaders will see the teachers and administrator discuss things like school safety. It's been a long time coming, she says, since the days of the late union leader Karen Lewis.
CTU President Stacy Davis Gates said the public bargaining session at Marquette Elementary School in Chicago Lawn is the culmination of a 14-year effort by the union. She believes parents and other community members will benefit from seeing union negotiators and school officials – in the vernacular – "Show their work."
People who want to attend the bargaining session can sign up at the Chicago Teachers Union website.
CTU President Stacy Davis Gates is the guest on our At Issue program this weekend and you can hear a lot more Sunday at 9:30 am and 9:30 pm.
