CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — With a month to go before Chicago Public School students return to classrooms, members of the Chicago Teachers Union are demanding that billions in relief money be spent on improving the schools.
Tara Stamps was among the CTU members who demonstrated Wednesday outside school board headquarters in the Loop.
"We have a moment in history that has never happened before. When there is more than enough to not just provide for leave, but to make it better than it was before the pandemic: school nurses, social workers, proper ventilation systems,” Stamps said.
Inside the board chambers, CPS CEO Dr. Jose Torres said masks, air-purifiers, sanitizing and distancing are part of the safety plan.
“"We are confident that these steps will keep schools, communities safe. But what will help tremendously is getting COVID-19 vaccines,” Torres said.
The city of Chicago’s COVID-19 dashboard showed just over 60% of Chicagoans age 12 and over have been fully vaccinated.
