CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Consumer advocates are out with their yearly warnings about dangerous toys and other unsafe products.
The Public Interest Research Group of Illinois this week unveiled its 35th annual Trouble in Toyland report.
Advocates for consumers and officials say with more online shopping, more products that haven’t been checked or tested are being sold to unsuspecting families.
PIRG Director Abe Scar said the biggest concern is toys with tiny parts that small children can swallow.
In a conference call Thursday, Dr. Elizabeth Power of Lurie Children’s Hospital said the emergency room is seeing children who have choked on dangerous toys.
Another problem is toys that come with confusing materials about what ages should play with the product. An example of the latter: a game called “Whack a Frog.”
U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said the Consumer Product Safety Commission should have enough money and resources to truly protect the public.
