(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — If you're intimidated by the task of putting up decorative lights, you might want to consider hiring someone to do it for you.
That’s where Kelly Fitzsimmons and her Chicago company, Light Up Your Holidays, come in.
“Just like people are hiring out, mowing your lawn, trimming your trees, it’s becoming more commonplace,” she told the Noon Business Hour on Friday. “Because people do realize how dangerous it is to get up on a ladder, to get onto your peaks, and how difficult it is to install wreaths and garlands so the extension cords don’t show.
“So, it really is worth the time and money, mainly to keep whoever’s installing in your family safe.”
Fitzsimmons said it’s up to each home owner to decide whether they’re going for an understated look or something that’s a little more over the top.
“That’s such personal taste. And I say: Make a decision,” she said.
Fitzsimmons said she started the business modestly more then 20 years ago out of the trunk of her car. She learned the nitty gritty details about running power and marketing.
“I would say I’ve gone through a lot of love-hate cycles in this business,” she said. “But after 20 years I’ve embraced it in such a way that I believe I'm in service to my clients to help them really create family memories that truly last a lifetime. It’s a very nostalgic tradition, and that is what keeps it fun.”
