(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Just two days after throwing a retirement party for Dax, a celebrated Lake County police dog, the sheriff’s department on Friday said the former K9 has died.

Dax had an array of diagnosed spinal issues after he was injured during the apprehension of a suspect last month. Physical therapy had allowed the nine-year department veteran to regain the use of his hind legs, but veterinarians advised the German shepherd could not handle further active duty.

Dax was present for a retirement ceremony Wednesday. On Friday, officials said Dax was gone.

The retired K9 was to live his golden years at the home of his longtime handler, Deputy John Forlenza, but Deputy Chief Chris Covelli said the animal's condition deteriorated and he was in a lot of pain. He said a veterinarian euthanized Dax at his favorite spot along the lakefront, with Forlenza at his side.

“K9 Dax will always hold a special place in our hearts, and we are incredibly saddened by his passing,” Sheriff John Idleburg said in a prepared statement. “K9 Dax will be remembered for the lives he saved, violent offenders he apprehended, and drugs he kept from being distributed in our community.  Please keep the Forlenza family in your thoughts and prayers.”
