(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Democratic state Rep. Delia Ramirez declared victory Tuesday against Republican candidate Justin Burau to represent Illinois' 3rd Congressional District.

Ramirez becomes the first Latina elected to Congress from the Midwest and only the second Guatemalan American elected to the U.S. House. She said her campaign “has broken a glass ceiling for Latinas.”

Ramirez, a progressive Democrat, defeated Ald. Gilbert “Gil” Villegas (36th) and two other challengers in the Democratic primary earlier this year.

Ramirez has said the overturning of Roe v. Wade takes an especially high toll on women in minority communities.

Burau ran unopposed in the primary election. According to his website, Burau was running "due to failed representation in my district and the current political climate in Washington."
