COOK COUNTY, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- There is an intense primary battle for a sometimes overlooked countywide office this spring. The Democratic race for Cook County Circuit Court Clerk is giving off some sparks.

Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Commissioner Mariyana Spyropoulos, has the party backing. What's different this time?

She says it's a one- on- one battle with two women running. Last election, incumbent Iris Martinez was facing three men.

Spyropoulos said she's running for Cook County Circuit Court Clerk, because she sees problems under Martinez.

"There's mismanagement," she said. "There's dysfunction among the staff and we definitely need a change in that office, because it has not been working for way too long."

However, Martinez, a former State Senator, said she's made many improvements since the days of her embattled predecessor Dorothy Brown and the pandemic.

She pointed out that she formed an Human Resources department, an inspector general's office, and modernized the technology as well.

Martinez added that one thing she knew when taking office is that the clerks would have to be retrained.

"We have a good outcome of that, because we hear from people out on the streets- from judges, from attorneys how that office has done a 180 degree turn."
