Fog blanketing Chicago area; What to know?

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Widespread fog is plaguing the Chicago area this morning, with some even experiencing dense fog.

The National Weather Service has a Dense Fog Advisory for all area counties- Cook, DuPage, Will, Kane, McHenry, Grundy, Kendall, De Kalb and La Salle- until noon.

The dense fog is affecting local air travel. As of 11:20 a.m., departing flights at O'Hare are currently delayed between 16 and 30 minutes. Earlier this morning, there was a ground stop for all incoming flights.

The NWS warns of visibility could be a quarter mile or less in some spots.

AccuWeather meteorologist Dean Devore explains that the foggy conditions are a result of the incoming warmer air riding on top of the existing colder, denser air.

Drivers should expect longer travel times, and, the NWS advises, to slow down and increase following distance. Drivers should also turn on their low beam headlights.

Fog will continue into the afternoon and evening and will stick around tomorrow.

AccuWeather says these next two days will be damp and dreary, with periods of rain forecasted for today and tomorrow. Temperatures will sit in the upper 30s.

Friday, we’ll dry out, AccuWeather says, reaching a high of 40 degrees. That hasn’t happened since Jan. 2.
