Developing: Thousands without power in NW Indiana

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — NIPSCO, one of Indiana’s largest gas and electric companies, reported a power outage in the northwestern part of the state Sunday afternoon.

The utility company said more than 2,500 homes and businesses were affected, with the vast majority located in Hammond, Ind.

Just before 1:30 p.m., NIPSCO reported 2,293 outages in Hammond. Griffith, Ind., was hit with 249 outages. Chesterton, Ind., saw the next-highest amounts with 37 outages.

Outages were reported as far east as Bristol, Ind.

Although the cause of the power outage is not yet known, storms did pass through the area earlier on Sunday.
