CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — As President Joe Biden launches his re-election campaign, Illinois’ senior senator said the oldest U.S. president ever elected is up for the challenge.

Sen. Dick Durbin with Biden in the U.S. Senate for more than a decade before Biden became vice president.

“I’ve known him for many years, and I’ve not seen any diminution in his own capacity to deal with this leadership challenge,” Durbin told WBBM.

The senator encouraged voters to look at Biden's positions in support of abortion access, gun control and efforts to reduce global warming when considering his re-election bid.  The Democratic whip also pointed to this administration's foreign policy.

“[To] not only mobilize, but to expand NATO to stop the aggression of Vladimir Putin,” said Durbin. “He is developing a relationship with the Chinese at this point that makes it clear to them that we’re not going to be pushed around by the Chinese Communist Party.”

Although several polls have suggested that most Democrat voters aren’t overly enthusiastic about Biden running for re-election, Durbin was complimentary of the president.

“He’s got the leadership skills,” Durbin said. “He’s physically able. I think he’s doing a great job.”
