CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Former Chicago Alderman Ed Burke begins his prison sentence today on corruption charges.
In June, Ed Burke was sentenced to two years in federal prison and ordered to pay $2 million after he was convicted on racketeering and bribery charges.
The 80-year-old will begin to serve his sentence at a minimum security camp in Thompson, Illinois.
Prosecutors had pushed for a ten year sentence, alleging Burke used his political power to receive bribes from entities with business before the City of Chicago so he could obtain legal business for his private law firm.
Burke was the longest-serving alderman in Chicago history, taking office in 1969 when he was 25-years-old to replace his late father, Joseph Burke, and leaving in 2023.
