CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The school board in Oswego District 308 plans to give high school students seats at the board table.

Starting with the new school year in the fall, the board plans to launch a new student ambassador program by selecting two high school students to join the school board.

According to the district, the students will act in an advisory capacity, providing a student voice on issues. The students would not be allowed to vote or attend closed-door executive sessions of the board.

Superintendent John Sparlin said the students will provide an opportunity for board members to get the student perspective on the matters the board considers.

"Sitting here at the table with the board obviously as non-voting members, they'll provide that student voice and that student perspective that will be able to voiced on issues that the board is facing and addressing," Sparlin said.

The student board positions will be held by high school seniors, who can apply for the seats during the spring semester of their junior year.

Applications to become a student school board representative are available through April 30 in the main office at Oswego High School and Oswego East High School. Applications are also available on request by contacting the district’s administration office at ustuder@sd308.org.

According to the district, applications and essays are due by 3 p.m. May 14. Applications will be reviewed on June 7 and finalists will be interviewed in closed session at a board meeting in July. The newly-selected student representatives will be seated at the first board meeting in August.
